Backend/Infrastructure Engineer at well-funded pre-Series A AI infrastructure startup

AI agents are currently 'goldfish' that forget every action the moment they finish a task. Join this well-funded London startup as their first engineering hire to build the infrastructure layer that gives agents a persistent memory. You'll architect high-performance systems with sub-80ms retrieval speeds, working directly with the founding team in Canary Wharf. If you're a systems expert who writes Rust or Go and wants to own the 'hot path' of AI execution history, this is your chance to build the foundational plumbing for the next generation of autonomous agents.

Overview

Role overview

As the first engineering hire, you will architect the core storage and retrieval systems that allow AI agents to possess persistent memory. You'll build high-performance infrastructure serving execution history in the hot path, ensuring agents learn from past runs. This is a high-ownership role for a systems expert ready to ship production-grade code.

Well-funded pre-Series A AI infrastructure startup building the operational memory layer for production agents

Responsibilities

What you will do

  • Design and implement the core storage and retrieval architecture to handle execution history and shared state across massive agent fleets.
  • Build and maintain the high-performance SDK that early design partners use to integrate persistent memory into their production AI stacks.
  • Profile system bottlenecks and optimize latency to maintain consistent sub-80ms performance while scaling the infrastructure to 100x current load.

Candidate profile

Who this is a fit for

  • 4-8 years of experience building latency-sensitive production systems using performance-oriented languages like Rust, Go, or C++.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and storage trade-offs, specifically with databases like Redis, RocksDB, or DynamoDB in high-traffic environments.
  • Proven track record of taking vague problem statements from concept to production-ready systems without needing pre-defined specifications or hand-holding.

What makes it remarkable

Why this role is remarkable

  • Join as the first engineering hire with significant equity and direct influence over the foundational architecture of a high-growth AI infrastructure startup.
  • Tackle the "goldfish memory" problem in AI by building a system that achieves sub-80ms retrieval speeds, faster than the blink of a human eye.
  • Work in-person with an elite founding team in Canary Wharf, building the essential plumbing that makes agentic frameworks like LangGraph and CrewAI production-ready.
